Thinking about living a minimalistic life
I am an avid podcast listener with an array of subjects that flood my ears. One of the few that have stuck with me is The Minimalist Podcast by Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. Their podcast is a great way to better understand what is it to become a minimalist. I’ve learned so much and love it.
Over the last couple of years the idea of living a more minimalistic life has been more appealing. Our home has slowly become one that our children ran; toys everywhere. Since moved to our new home, we have managed to cut that down by teaching the kids they don’t always need so many toys all at once. It is a great way to teach our kids about value versus wanting the unnecessary. I think this can only be done if I lead by example, which is why Juan and I will start living a minimalistic life.
After speaking to some people who live a minimalistic lifestyle, I brought it up to Juan and asked him if we can do this. His immediate text was “I can’t. I own too much s*** I like.” When he got home that night we spoke about becoming a minimalist and what it would mean for us and our kids. He was all for it and thought it would be harder for me to do because I like shopping and buying things that I don’t need, especially when it comes to the kids. We decided to make the change and we would start to teach the kids how to as well.
Living a minimalist life does not mean getting rid of all your stuff or having a plain looking home. It means living a meaningful life, not placing importance to something that genuinely doesn't bring value or meaning to your life. I find this so peaceful, Juan and I have been starting this way of living, we also started introducing it to our children.
